WHAT IS BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU..and why you should come train at our academy.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial arts and self defense system based on grappling and ground fighting techniques.
Mastered by the Gracie family in Brazil. BJJ focuses on the use of leverage, grips, and proper technique so a smaller and/ or weaker person can control a larger and/ or stronger person. BJJ is a game of human chess that is physically and mentally challenging. Students will benefit from increased physical fitness, problem solving ability, and better mind and body awareness while learning to defend themselves.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for Adults
At Renzo Gracie Astoria classes are offered 6 days a week in traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Submission Grappling (No-GI).
Each 90-minute session begins with first, a dynamic warm up and takedown drills, second, a step-by-step breakdown of a specific jiu jitsu technique and drilling and third, live sparring with other students to test techniques in a controlled and safe environment.
Our instructors provide detailed explanation for every position and technique that is second to none and they happily offer one-on-one attention to students. New students unfamiliar with jiu jitsu will transition smoothly under the guidance of our instructors and more experienced students.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu students at Renzo Gracie Astoria must wear a Gi, or kimono, a uniform, with the exception of first time students. For our No-Gi classes students can wear a t-shirt or rashguard and shorts.
Beginners BJJ classes are one hour session meant for first time students and white belts with six months or less experience. However, all belt levels are welcomed.
The goal of the class is to obtain a solid foundation of BJJ through theory, technique and principles. Students will have a better understanding of jiu jitsu vocabulary, basic positions, escapes and submissions.
