What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)  is a grappling based martial art and self-defense system that places an emphasis on ground fighting techniques. BJJ focuses on the skill of controlling a resisting opponent in ways that force him or her to submit.  It is often referred to as a “gentle art”, because of the use of leverage and balance rather than force and strength.   It is a game of human chess that is both physically and mentally demanding.  Positional strategy and control are emphasized before submitting your opponent with chokeholds or joint locks.

I’m not in the best physical shape; I have no martial arts experience; I’m a female; I am older. When I’m in class, will I have training partners willing to work with me?

BJJ is for everyone.  We have male and female students of different ages, sizes and experience levels.  You will definitely find someone to train with and feel comfortable with as all our students are friendly and knowledgeable. Higher ranking students are approachable and can answer most questions you may have as a beginner and we will train with you.

I have no martial arts experience. Do you offer Beginner BJJ classes?

Yes! We recommend those with no experience and less than six months to take our Beginner BJJ classes offered 3x a week – Mondays, Wednesdays at 6:30pm and Fridays at 6pm.  Our Beginner classes focus on the basics and will introduce you to terminology.

I am not sure if I will be able to keep up with the pace of the class. Do I need to be in shape before I start?

Absolutely not!  You will find that once you start taking classes regularly you will become a healthier fitter version of yourself!  Not only will you learn essential skills of self-defense and combat, practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will improve your cardio and endurance. Weight loss is also another great benefit of training.

How are classes structured?

The first part of class consists of a quick warm up of plyometric and calisthenic exercises to improve the body’s conditioning and coordination. After the warm up, you will be paired up with someone similar in size and shape for  takedown drills.  Then, the instructor will show a  technique or sequence of 2-3 techniques and you will get a chance to practice it.  The last part of the class is “rolling” or live sparring. Live sparring gives students a chance to practice the techniques learned.

What should I wear for my first class? Do I need a uniform?

No, for your first class you aren’t expected to wear a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi, or kimono. You can wear normal gym attire. We do have BJJ Gis and rashguards for sale at the front desk.

Is there a belt system for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Yes, BJJ has a belt system. Adult BJJ belts are White, Blue, Purple, Brown and Black, in that order. For our Kids BJJ program, the ranks are White, Grey, Yellow, Orange and Green. For both adults and kids, each rank has 4 stripes (degrees) before a promotion to the next belt.

Is BJJ beneficial for women to learn?

Yes. BJJ is excellent for rape prevention and other forms of self-defense necessary for women against a stronger, larger assailant. Strategic grips and proper application of leverage and body weight distribution will allow a woman to escape from attackers standing or on the ground. Our female students are our most technical students.

At what age can kids participate in BJJ classes?

We recommend kids start at 4-5 years old. We offer Kids BJJ classes 4x a week, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 5pm and Saturdays 10:30am.

My child is already very energetic, will training martial arts encourage aggression?

BJJ classes will provide an outlet for your child to channel excess energy or aggression in a fun and safe environment.  The structure, consistency and ritual elements of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will shape your child to be more focused, disciplined and respectful. You will notice positive changes in your child after just a few classes. Studies show that children improve their social, behavioral and self-defense skills through martial arts.

Do instructors offer private lessons?
